A New Mexico State Police officer was shot and killed and several other officers were injured in a shooting on Thursday on Interstate 10 between Deming and Las Cruces, N.M., the authorities said.
A suspect was dead, the State Police said in a statement, adding that the “scene is still active with limited information.” The interstate was closed, the police said.
The Las Cruces police said that officers from several agencies were investigating reports of an “incident involving shots fired” along Interstate 10 near Las Cruces.
The Police Department said that drivers should avoid the area and seek alternate routes until the investigation was complete, a process that could take hours.
The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office asked people to avoid the area of Interstate 10 near the Interstate 25 interchange and Motel Boulevard. The sheriff’s office said that lanes of traffic had been shut down in both directions and closed for several hours.
