“This is not OK”

Riverdale actress Lili Reinhart has taken to social media to implore her fans to stay away from body retouching apps.

In an Instagram story shared on Sunday, Reinhart explained how she was searching for an app to resize her photos when she came across an app that lets users alter their appearance. After watching a demonstration video, the actress was horrified. “This is not okay,” she wrote. “This is why people develop eating disorders. This is why social media has become hazardous to our health. This is why people have unrealistic expectations of their bodies.”

She continued, “I implore you: do not use these kinds of apps. If you photoshop your body, you are adding to this problem. This is how unrealistic standards of human bodies have been created – to the point where people alter their bodies surgically to achieve unattainable results. We are better than this. Looking skinnier on Instagram is not worth the detrimental psychological effects that these photoshopping apps have given our generation. Our bodies should not conform to ‘one size fits all.’” She finished by saying, “My heart goes out to those people who feel like their bodies aren’t good enough.”

This isn’t the first time Reinhart has spoken out about the importance of self-love. The actress has been a vocal advocate for body positivity since coming onto the scene. Most recently, she told Glamour, “Even today, I see myself in the mirror and think, this doesn’t look the way the world tells me it should. I don’t have a cinched, miniscule waist. I do have curves, I have cellulite, my arms aren’t stick thin. This is my body and we’re told that it should fit certain proportions. There’s such a disgusting problem right now with people photoshopping their bodies. Obviously there’s a reason why people do it, they’re insecure, they feel like they’re not good enough, and that’s incredibly sad.” The new face of CoverGirl namechecked Ashley Graham and Charli Howard in the interview as being “authentically themselves” by promoting “healthy, real body images” adding, “I think that is so refreshing and important. Our community values need to reflect that.”

Reinhart was recently featured on Times‘ 100 Next list. Taking to Instagram to share her excitement, the Hustlers actress wrote, “Never thought I’d be in the position I am in today where people respond so openly to me speaking about mental health and body acceptance. Eternally grateful to everyone who has cheered me on these last few years.”
