Fresh off Insecure‘s eight Emmy nominations, Issa Rae is setting up her next project. Deadline reports that Rae is eyeing a starring role in Sinkhole, a genre film produced by Jordan Peele. Rae will co-produce and develop the movie alongside Peele, according to the outlet.
The movie is based on a short story by Leyna Krow that’s included in her 2017 collection I’m Fine, But You Appear to Be Sinking. Per Deadline, Universal Pictures beat out more than 10 other studios for rights to the tale, which follows a family who moves into a new house with an enormous sinkhole in their backyard. “The mysterious sinkhole manages to fix broken and destroyed things. However, the story asks, what if that thing is a person?” the outlet reports of the movie’s premise.
Sinkhole is part of the five-year deal Peele’s production company Monkeypaw’s signed with Universal, the products of which include Get Out and Us. While Peele directed both of those movies, there’s no word on whether he’ll helm Sinkhole. Deadline notes that Krow’s short story is set on the Spokane, Washington street the writer resides on. It reportedly wrestles with ideas about how society views “imperfect” women through a psychological sci-fi/horror lens.
In the wake of Insecure‘s Emmy noms in categories including Best Comedy Series and Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Rae wrote on Instagram: “Thank you guys for all of the #Emmys love and support! Proud to see so many of my heroes and peers (peer-oes?) acknowledged! Much love to my @insecurehbo family and my @ablackladysketchshow family with 3 Emmy nods!” She added, “I’m throwing a Rooting For Everybody Black Parking Lot Party! Rona can’t stop us!”
Sinkhole is still in development and has yet to receive an official release date.
