The Toronto-based creative is part of our Wear Canada Proud sale, which starts tomorrow.

For nearly a decade, Sid Neigum has remained one of the most intriguing designers in the Canadian fashion landscape. Originally hailing from Alberta, the now Toronto-based Neigum’s collections have become known for a sense of attainable luxury and attention to craft, with his most recent pieces featuring delicate plissé details and dramatic metallic fabrics. We caught up with Neigum to see what he’s been working on during the COVID-19 crisis, and how he been staying positive through the global pandemic.

You’ve been running your brand for almost ten years. What do you know now that you wish you knew then?

To have more patience; it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

What’s been the biggest and most important change to the global fashion industry that you’ve noticed since launching your brand?

I think we are seeing that change right now. Changes to the calendar, timing, overproduction/overconsumption, inclusion, diversity. It is empowering to watch that change unfold and to be able to take part in it.

What do you feel has been the biggest key to your success as a designer?

Grit and luck.

How do you keep evolving your brand?

Staying curious, learning, and researching.

How are you staying positive through the COVID-19 crisis and ongoing protests and actions right now?

Meditation, running, reading, listening. Recently I have shifted focus to create level 3 and 4 waterproof medical gowns. It is rewarding to be able to contribute in a positive way.

What are your biggest influences and inspirations right now while you’re designing?

As of late, because regular collections are on hold, it has been doctors and nurses. Understanding their needs in the PPE they wear, and the machines and construction it takes to achieve that. [This] will eventually inform some of the design and construction decisions for my future collections.

Sid Neigum is one of the brands taking part in the Wear Canada Proud Online Shopping Event, presented by FASHION and CAFA, from June 16-17. Click here for more information.
