Revolution’s in the air (again) on Outlander. The fifth season of the time-traveling Starz series premieres Sunday, February 16, and the first trailer teases the Frasers’ renewed determination to alter history.
Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) are settling into life on Fraser’s Ridge with their family, including daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton), her partner Roger (Richard Rankin), and their son Jeremiah. But the American Revolution is hurtling toward North Carolina, and Jamie, a Scot already pardoned for his involvement in the Jacobite Rising of 1745, is expected to fight for the British. As the couple wrestles with how to fulfill their duties while upholding their principles, Jamie makes a plea to Brianna to protect her new family, suggesting she take her son back to the 20th century. “It would be safer in your time,” he says.
The new trailer also depicts Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) and Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy) together following the consummation of their relationship, and Jamie wrestling with his godfather’s status as a wanted man. Though Jamie and Claire continue to profess their love to one other (Jamie tells Claire, “Whatever tomorrow brings, it is a blessing you came to me”), the trailer ends on a particularly ominous note. When Claire asks, “What kind of world is this?” and Jamie responds, “the only one,” Claire has a surprising response: “No it isn’t.” She’d never consider a return to the present, but trying to change the past is one of her favorite activities.
Here’s the official description for the new season from Starz:
Season 5 of Outlander finds the Frasers fighting for their family and the home they have forged on Fraser’s Ridge. Jamie must find a way to defend all that he has created in America, and to protect those who look to him for leadership and protection—while hiding his personal relationship with Murtagh Fitzgibbons, the man whom Governor William Tryon has ordered him to hunt down and kill. With her family together at last, Claire Fraser must use her modern medical knowledge and foresight to prevent them from being ripped apart once again. However, while focusing on protecting others, she risks losing sight of what it means to protect herself. Meanwhile, Brianna Fraser and Roger MacKenzie have been reunited, but the spectre of Stephen Bonnet still haunts them. Roger strives to find his place—as well as Jamie’s respect—in this new and dangerous time. The Frasers must come together, navigating the many perils that they foresee—and those they can’t.
Outlander season 5 premieres Sunday, February 16 at 8 p.m. on Starz.
